My Plan
Establishing Term Limits on Board Members
For the past 23 years, the Antelope Valley has been represented by the same leadership, in return, tax-payer dollars have been wasted, student enrollment, graduation, and transfer rates have slowed and the trust of the community and staff has been eroded. These conditions have hurt students the most, it’s time for a new wave of leadership that will take action and fight for our students and faculty.

Our community suffers when students and working families don't have bold leadership representing them, this is why Christon-Pope will fight for term limits to be put on all College Board members, to ensure that our leadership is always full of new ideas.

Respect for our Unions
For the past few years, the opposition candidate has had a horrible track record of working with our Unions to protect Teachers’ rights while holding our administration accountable, Christon-Pope will change that. We are more powerful when we work together to solve problems, instead of working against each other. This is why Christon-Pope intends to stand behind the unions representing AVC Faculty and Staff every step of the way to ensure that everyone feels heard.

Organized Labor and Unions are the way we make the American workforce stronger, and that starts at AVC which is why Christon-Pope will always be an ally with AVC Unions to protect teachers' rights while holding our administration accountable.

Keeping Our Students Safe
When students come to campus they deserve to feel safe and protected by those who represent them, the past administration has been soft on crime and has allowed for crime on campus to surge. Given Christon-Pope’s track record for keeping students safe, he will partner with stakeholders, students, and campus safety officers to collaborate on crime prevention strategies and measures that keep our Westside students feeling safe on campus.

While crime both on and off campus continues to surge, given Christon-Pope’s track record of keeping students safe, he will ensure to come up with restorative crime prevention strategies that keep Westside students safe on campus.

Increasing Transparency and Board Accountability
As a Marauder and public servant, Giovanni has witnessed the erosion of public trust and what it’s done to the morale of our students, faculty, and community. Under Christon-Pope’s transparency and accountability agenda, he will ensure the Board of Trustees are fully compliant with the Brown Act while fighting for Term Limits on Board Members.
  • Christon-Pope seeks to ensure Trustees aren’t self-evaluating and will limit closed session Board of Trustee meetings. . He will establish an integrity watchdog on campus to keep your College Board accountable to Westside students and Working Families.
    • Our students deserve great leadership that is accountable and transparent, Christon-Pope will fight for policies that ensure Board Members are accountable to the students and working families they represent.
    • The Brown Act is California’s Sunshine Law which states that when local government entities such as the AVC Board of Trustees, meet, they must conduct their meetings in a manner that is accessible to the public. This law is made to ensure that decisions are made with public input and thus public trust is had in the institutions that represent communities all across California. For far too long the Board of Trustees has used a loophole that allows for major items in the public interest to be discussed in private without community input. At the Board of Trustees, Christon-Pope will fight to ensure they’re Brown Act Compliant and will build trust between the Board of Trustees and the AV community.

Promote an Era of Fiscal Responsibility
While the cost of living in California continues to increase, Westside students and working families need to be able to trust that their representatives respect their hard-earned taxpayer dollars and aren’t overspending on projects that don’t get finished.
  • Under Giovanni’s agenda to promote an era of fiscal responsibility at AVC, he will ensure that an outside firm is hired to conduct an audit on all AVC spending, and new construction projects, this will eliminate all wasteful spending currently occurring. Commissioner Christon-Pope will ensure all pending lawsuits are settled to prevent the public from having to pay for AVC’s legal missteps.
    • Westside students and working families need to be able to trust that their representatives respect their hard-earned taxpayer dollars, Christon-Pope will see to it that money is distributed accordingly that is within the best interests of our students and staff.

Helping Students win the Future
Data from Antelope Valley College shows a rapid decline in graduation rates, transfer rates, and enrollment rates. Students currently do not have the resources or support from the Board of Trustees to succeed at AVC or in the community. Policies enacted by the current Board of Trustees such as canceling intersession classes, and rolling back the number of online classes available for working students stifle student progress.
  • The current Board of Trustees has failed to meet the needs of students for too long. Christon-Pope will bring back intersession classes and increase the number of virtual classes; as Commissioner Christon-Pope understands education is the pathway for students to succeed in life and will ensure students have the proper support and resources to ensure their success.
    • To ensure education is equitable for all Christon-Pope will fight to roll back the board policy that canceled intersession classes, and commit to increasing the number of virtual courses available to students.

Respecting our Adjunct Faculty and Classified Staff
As the only person in this race endorsed by the Unions that represent Adjunct Faculty and Classified Staff, and the son of a public servant, Christon-Pope understands that if those who sacrifice for our students are not respected, the students, faculty, and campus morale will suffer. Christon-Pope will respect and incentivize the work of teachers by working to provide benefits such as increased salaries and mileage reimbursements.

Christon-Pope knows educators are the backbone of our society and therefore will respect and incentivize the work of teachers by working to provide benefits such as increased salaries and mileage reimbursements.
